Day-Wise Trek with Homestays

Day 1: Leh → Chilling → Trek to Skiu

  • Drive: ~2 hours from Leh to Chilling
  • Trek Distance: ~7 km (after river crossing)
  • Altitude Gain: 3,150 m → 3,350 m
  • Stay: Skiu Women SHG Homestay
  • Highlights:
    • Cross the Zanskar River via pulley bridge
    • Riverscape views, small chortens, and willow groves
    • Evening herbal tea and local snack at homestay

Day 2: Skiu → Markha

  • Trek Distance: ~20 km
  • Altitude Gain: 3,350 m → 3,700 m
  • Trail Difficulty: Moderate, long day with river crossing
  • Stay: Markha SHG Homestay Cluster
  • Experiences:
    • Packed local lunch from SHG women
    • Visit to Markha monastery and old fort

Try chhurpi (dried yak cheese) and mint tea

Day 3: Markha → Hankar

  • Trek Distance: ~11–12 km
  • Altitude Gain: 3,700 m → 4,100 m
  • Trail Difficulty: Moderate ascent with narrowing trails
  • Stay: Hankar SHG Eco Homestay
  • Highlights:
    • Glimpses of Kang Yatse II
    • Farm-to-plate dinner with sun-dried vegetables
    • Optional: Wool craft demonstration

Optional Day 4–5: Trek to Nimaling & Kongmaru La (Advanced)

  • Hankar → Nimaling: 10 km | 4,700 m
  • Nimaling → Kongmaru La → Shang Sumdo exit: ~16 km | 5,250 m pass
  • Stay: Camp or basic shelters
  • Note: This section is recommended for experienced trekkers only

SHG Homestays: What to Expect

Each village homestay along this trail is run by local women’s Self Help Groups (SHGs). Expect:

  • Clean bedding & traditional Ladakhi rooms
  • Organic, local food: barley, pulses, potatoes, dried greens
  • Herbal teas made from seabuckthorn, mint, thyme
  • Basic solar lighting, shared dry toilets or outdoor setups
  • Waste segregation and water refill stations
  • Optional activities: cooking sessions, story sharing, local product shopping

Food You’ll Eat Along the Way

  • Breakfast: Khambir (Ladakhi bread), butter tea, porridge
  • Lunch: Packed barley thukpa, boiled eggs, apples, ngampe
  • Dinner: Skyu, thukpa, paba, tangtur, wild herb soup
  • Drinks: Herbal teas (seabuckthorn, chamomile, mint), butter tea

Note: All meals are vegetarian by default. Inform hosts in advance if you have dietary restrictions.

  • Trash bag (carry back your own waste)
