About this Experience

Tucked away in the peaceful valley of Phukpochey, this experience is an invitation to slow down, unplug, and live a day as a Ladakhi villager. Guided by your host Stanzin and his family, you’ll engage in the everyday rhythm of farming, cooking, and storytelling that defines life here. This is not a simulation—it’s authentic village life, experienced with respect and warmth.

Location & Community

Phukpochey is a small, serene village where barley fields glow golden under the mountain sun and homes are built from earth, stone, and generations of wisdom. The community here practices sustainable agriculture, preserves ancient customs, and navigates modern challenges with grace. Your host, Stanzin, runs the Sonam Khangsar Homestay and is an active voice in reviving traditional village pride through tourism that is responsible and reciprocal.

Cultural Relevance

In villages like Phukpochey, life is collective. You’ll see how families share water through the yura system, work together during sowing and harvest, and preserve food communally for the long winters. You’ll learn how practices like dung composting, dry toilets, and solar drying aren’t “sustainable trends”—they’re ancestral ways of life.

Did you know? Many homes still store tsampa (roasted barley flour) in traditional granaries and preserve apricot kernels and wild herbs for winter medicine. You may even try your hand at shaping mok mok (momos) with local fillings.

Highlights

  • Join hands with Stanzin's family in their morning routine—whether it’s feeding the animals or gathering fresh greens from the field
  • Participate in traditional Ladakhi cooking using seasonal ingredients
  • Understand dry composting toilets, yura irrigation, and solar food preservation
  • Explore Phukpochey’s layout, its lha-tho (sacred stones), and spiritual markers
  • Share stories, folklore, and mountain philosophies over butter tea

9:30 AM – Welcome at Sonam Khangsar Homestay

Arrive at Phukpochey and enjoy a glass of chhang (local barley brew) or a warm cup of gur-gur cha (butter tea) with your host Stanzin and his family.

10:00 AM – A Morning in the Life

Depending on the season, you may water the barley fields, feed dzomos, or collect wild spinach (tsot). Learn how every action connects to food security and land care.

11:30 AM – Cooking & Crafting the Ladakhi Way

Chop, grind, knead, and stir as you help cook a typical Ladakhi meal—perhaps thukpa, mok mok, or paba—using tools passed down for generations.

1:00 PM – Communal Meal with the Family

Share the meal you helped prepare. Ask questions, hear stories, and understand how hospitality is the heart of Ladakhi culture.

2:00 PM – Village Walk & Conversations

Take a gentle walk through Phukpochey with Stanzin—visit his fields, spiritual sites, and ancient willow trees while hearing tales of how life has changed (and stayed the same).

3:00 PM – Reflections & Goodbyes

Enjoy one last cup of tea, jot down a message in the guestbook, and take a photo with your host family before heading back with memories that linger.
